Penis size has long been a topic of intrigue and discussion. And while there’s limited scientific evidence around the subject of penis size, research that does exist and informal anecdotal evidence alike put an 8-inch penis firmly in the camp of above average size.

The idea of having an 8-inch penis is often glorified through media, pop culture, in online forums, and beyond. However, having a large penis comes with its own set of challenges, one of which being comfortably having sexual intercourse with a partner without causing them discomfort.

Men with above-average erect penis size may also have to take care to buy condoms that can safely accommodate them in order to prevent potential breakage.

Keep reading to learn more about how to tackle some of the challenges of having an 8-inch penis in addition to how this size compares to the average penis length.

How rare is an 8-inch penis and how many guys have one? It’s hard to say considering the limited amount of formal research on penis size. Based on the best available data, an 8-inch penis is probably less common and significantly larger than average, which may be closer to 5 inches erect.

The perception of what’s considered an average penis size is often warped due to factors such as pornography, media, and exaggeration among males. Some men or women may believe that penis sizes of 8 inches or larger are average.

It’s difficult to get scientifically standardized results to clear up what’s what on penis size because of data-collection challenges. The results of the narrow, limited studies and informal surveys examining average penis size have reported wildly differing results based on the data-collection process and measurement technique:

  • Whether data was self-reported

  • Whether participants measured their own penis or if researchers measured it

  • Whether penises were measured from the pubic bone or by compressing the fat on top of this bone

Most studies examining penis length measure stretched penis size rather than erect size, which are often comparable. Measuring stretched length takes out the need for participants to achieve an erection in an unsexual setting.

In one of the most cited studies in recent years, researchers reported an average of around 5.1 to 5.5 inches for stretched penis length. The researchers noted that the true average is likely closer to 5.1 inches due to volunteer bias.

Another review of studies published in the World Journal of Men’s Health in 2023 suggests the same: The average penis might be around 3.4 inches in a flaccid state, and 5.5 inches erect.

Penis size has long been linked to masculinity, virility, and sexual prowess. An 8-inch penis and other above average sizes are often idealized by men and some women. Media portrayals in adult films and anecdotal tales have further romanticized the idea that larger penises are associated with greater masculinity or sexual performance.

While research suggests that a significant portion of men wish their penis were larger, many men don’t consider that having a large penis size comes with additional challenges.

Some of the potential challenges of an 8-inch dick include:

  • Clothing and comfort: Finding underwear that fits comfortably can be a challenge. Larger penis sizes may cause discomfort in tight pants or during physical activities such as running or biking.

  • Compatibility issues: An 8-inch penis may pose challenges during sexual intercourse, especially if the partner’s anatomy cannot comfortably accommodate your size. Pain or discomfort for your partner may be especially likely without proper communication or foreplay.

  • Condom sizing: Standard condoms may not fit properly, increasing the risk of breakage or slippage. Larger, appropriately sized condoms are essential for safe sex. Learn more about condom sizing here.

Additionally, sexual satisfaction is not solely dependent on penis size. Communication, technique, and emotional connection play essential roles in achieving satisfaction for both partners.

The Psychological and Emotional Impact of Having a Large Penis

Having a large penis can introduce various psychological and emotional impacts that may be positive or negative.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

For some men, having an 8-inch penis may boost confidence and self-esteem, as societal norms often equate larger sizes with desirability.

However, some men may feel objectified or that others are overly focused on this specific part of their anatomy, potentially contributing to insecurities or performance anxiety. They may also feel self-conscious if they receive an erection in public and it becomes visible through their clothing.

Body Dysmorphia

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where you become preoccupied with a perceived flaw in your appearance, leading to significant distress. Medically, BDD involving the penis is called penile dysmorphic disorder. Less formally, it may be called “small-penis syndrome.”

Research suggests that many men are dissatisfied with their penis size, even when they don’t measure on the smaller side. Many men who seek penis enlargement surgery seem to be of at least average length.

In a 2022 study, researchers collected data on 37 males undergoing consultation for penis enlargement surgery. The researchers found that a small but sizable portion displayed signs of body dysmorphic disorder.

The Link between Penis Size and Erectile Dysfunction

There is no known direct correlation between penis size and erectile dysfunction (ED). Erectile dysfunction may occur no matter whether your penis is on the smaller or larger side.

A common treatment for erectile dysfunction often includes prescription medications called PDE-5 inhibitors such as Viagra® (sildenafil) or Cialis® (tadalafil).

Debunking Myths About Penis Size

The following are some common myths about penis size.

Bigger Is Always Better

It’s a common misconception that penis length is the most important factor when it comes to providing sexual satisfaction to a partner. Current evidence isn’t robust enough to deduce conclusions on the relationship between penis size and sexual satisfaction. Despite the limited research available on the subject of penis size and partner satisfaction, it’s not believed to be universally true that a larger penis correlates to increased partner pleasure.

Though a larger penis size may provide more stimulation for some partners, it may also cause pain if the penis isn’t able to fit into their anatomy comfortably.

Other factors beyond size that likely play a large role in determining sexual satisfaction include:

  • Emotional intimacy

  • Communication between partners

  • Sexual techniques

  • Use of adequate foreplay

Research suggests penis girth, more so than length, may play a more meaningful role in providing women sexual satisfaction during intercourse. In one study, researchers looked into how important penis length and width is for predicting female sexual satisfaction. An overwhelming majority of the participants reported that penis width was a more important factor than length.

Penis Size Affects Fertility

Genital size doesn’t affect fertility. The ability to conceive depends on sperm quality and other factors are unrelated to physical penis dimensions.

The only exception is in the case of very small penises such as micropenis, which is sometimes associated with infertility-causing conditions such as Klinefelter syndrome.

The term micropenis is often used to refer to a small penis, but it’s a medical term referring to a significantly smaller-than-average penis often due to androgen hormone deficiency during early fetal development.

A Larger Penis Makes You More Masculine

Having a big dick is unrelated to your masculinity, which is a subjective term referring to how much of a man you are. If you consider having higher testosterone levels more masculine, bear in mind there’s no evidence to support that penis size relates to testosterone levels in adults.

Flaccid Penis Length Correlates with Erect Length

Larger flaccid penis size may be slightly related to larger erect penis side, but there’s minimal research on the matter, with results showing a huge range of variance. (Read: Take it with a grain of salt.) In a 2018 study, researchers found flaccid measurements were only moderately accurate in predicting erect size.

The terms “growers” and “showers” are often used to refer to men with flaccid penises that become significantly larger when erect or become only mildly bigger when erect, respectively.

There may not be any veritable Goldilocks of penis size—a penis that’s ”just right” depends on factors beyond inches—but here’s what to know about penises that are a little smaller and a little bigger.

Is a 7-inch Penis Bigger than Average?

Available research findings suggest that a 7-inch penis is also above the average size by an inch or more.

Even a 6-inch penis or a 5 inch penis is likely still within the average size range.

Do Any Men Have a 10-inch Penis?

It’s likely that some men have a penis of 10 inches or larger in length. Reports of erect penises 10 inches or more have been reported in the newspapers and on social media, but haven’t been confirmed in formal research. Penis lengths of 10 inches or more are likely rare.

In a 2021 study from Argentina, researchers measured penis size among 800 participants. The 95th percentile for stretched penis length was 18.5 centimeters (7.3 inches), meaning that 95 percent of the penises were this length or smaller, and only 5 percent of all measurements were bigger.

They considered the 100th percentile 21.5cm (8.5 inches).

Understanding how to measure your penis accurately is not just helpful for reasons of curiosity. It’s also essential for ensuring a proper condom fit. Follow these steps to get an accurate measurement:

  1. Select the correct starting point: Always measure from the top side of your penis (the side facing you when looking down). This method ensures consistency by using the pubic bone as a fixed reference point.

  2. Position your measuring tool: Use a ruler or a flexible tape measure. Place it at the base of your penis, where it meets your body. Press gently past any fat or pubic hair to reach the pubic bone, ensuring an accurate measurement. A flexible measuring tape is preferable if your penis has a natural curve.

  3. Record the Length: Measure from the pubic bone to the tip of your penis. Whether erect or flaccid, maintaining the same method each time will give you consistent results. Keep in mind that many people who say they have an 8-inch penis or larger may be exaggerating or might measure in their own way.

An 8-inch penis is likely well-above average, based on the best available scientific and anecdotal evidence. While a large penis is often considered desirable, it may come with its own set of challenges.

Men with large penises may have trouble finding condoms that fit properly and may encounter certain difficulties during partnered sexual activity.

Some ways men with large penises may be able to support their sex life include:

  • Choosing the right condoms: It’s best to use condoms designed for larger sizes to ensure comfort, safety, and effectiveness during sexual activity.

  • Communicate with partners: It’s a good idea to discuss preferences, boundaries, and concerns openly to foster mutual understanding and enjoyment.

  • Focus on foreplay: Foreplay can help prepare the partner for penetration and reduce discomfort, especially if size is a concern.

  • Use lubrication: Adequate lubrication can prevent pain and may help enhance pleasure during intercourse. You can find our glide water-based lube here.

  • Seek professional advice: It’s best to talk to your healthcare provider or a sexual health expert if your penis size is a concern.
