If you’ve spent time researching hair loss treatments, you’ve probably come across Hims Hair and Nutrafol supplements. While the two brands both offer hair growth products, you'll find they offer very different hair loss solutions once you start digging into the nitty gritty (which we’ve done for your here).

Here, we’ll compare Hims Hair and Nutrafol’s men's product offerings and how each brand operates, including pricing, doctor consults, customer service, and more.

Signing Up for Hims

The first step with Hims (that’s us) is filling out an intake form that gathers information about your hair loss and your hair goals. These questions include how long and where you’ve been experiencing hair loss, if you’ve used hair loss medication before, and more lifestyle questions like how you like to style your hair and if hair loss runs in your family. These questions give us a holistic vision of your hair loss needs and goals, and in many cases, we will also ask for a photo of your hair.

After completing the form, you’ll create an account (or log in to an existing one) and see your recommended treatments plus the monthly cost. At this point, you’ll also input credit card information, but you won’t be charged until after you’ve been prescribed by one of our healthcare providers.

Signing Up for Nutrafol

Nutrafol does not have any prescription products, so if you know which one you want to buy, you can navigate to their website, add it to your cart, and pay — much like any other online retail experience.

However, if you need guidance, a “hair wellness quiz” on their website helps you find your formula. It asks about your current age, when you noticed hair loss, how you would describe your hair and more. Then, you’ll input your email address, and your product recommendation will be sent to you. This form is for informational purposes only and it is not reviewed by a physician.

Nutrafol does not offer prescription products, so simply put,  it’s not possible to get a prescription through Nutrafol. The brand’s offerings are drug-free (made with vitamins and other over-the-counter ingredients), meaning you can buy them without approval from a provider. Nutrafol is available in some retail locations, including Sephora.

Though you won’t need a prescription with Nutrafol, you may still have the option to meet with a naturopathic doctor.

As we mentioned, with Hims, a board-certified healthcare professional will review your intake form and recommend the product that most aligns with your needs (which may or may not be a prescription, as we offer both). Hims is able to satisfy the requirements for telehealth visits in all 50 states, plus Washington D.C. (this can be an asynchronous visit, a video, or a phone call), which means it’s possible to get access to a prescription regardless of where in America you live.

Hims and Nutrafol both offer hair loss treatments, though none of their products are the same (though there is some occasional ingredient overlap).

Hims Hair Products

Hims offers access to the following hair products for men.

Nutrafol Men’s Offerings

Nutrafol has two oral products for men and two topical scalp care products, which we’ll cover below.

Nutrafol Men’s Hair Growth Nutraceutical

The word “nutraceutical” is a blend of the words “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical.”  Nutrafol men’s nutraceutical is essentially a hair growth supplement containing ingredients like vitamins A, C, D, and E, biotin, iodine zinc, and selenium. Nutrafol may be beneficial especially if you’re noticing hair loss from stress, nutritional deficiencies, or hormonal imbalances.

The men’s nutraceutical also contains ingredient blends: a patented Synergen Complex™ and a “Nutrafol Blend.” These blends include ingredients like marine collagen, ashwagandha, saw palmetto,  curcumin, keratin, and more, though the exact amounts are unknown because they are proprietary.

A dose of Nutrafol nutraceutical is four large pills taken once daily with a meal.

Nutrafol DHT Inhibitor

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone largely responsible for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). DHT inhibitors are products that block the conversion of testosterone to DHT.

Like the nutraceutical,  Nutrafol DHT inhibitor doesn’t contain medication but instead is made using a botanical blend of extracts, including nettle, African cherry tree, magnolia bark, and reishi mushroom. This is not a standalone product — it’s only available when bundled with the nutraceutical. A dose of the DHT inhibitor is two pills taken at the same time as the nutraceutical, which means you’ll take six large pills at once.

Hair Serum For Men

This scalp and hair serum is made with ingredients like caffeine, tea tree leaf extract, and “ashwagandha exosomes,” which are thought to promote hair growth (though more research is needed). It’s available as a standalone product or bundled with the nutraceutical.

2-In-1 Shampoo & Conditioner

This 2-in-1 shampoo product is physician-formulated and made with botanical, natural ingredients. Like our haircare products, it’s sulfate-free. The brand says it’s the first 2-in-1 product to be certified “scalp microbiome-friendly” by MyMicrobiome, though it’s not immediately clear what that certification entails.

Nutrafol’s products are more expensive overall than those of Hims Hair. Here’s how it breaks down.

A one-month supply of the men’s nutraceutical costs $88 and incurs a $6.95 shipping fee.

You’ll save money if you opt for a Nutrafol subscription, which we’ll discuss soon.

Nutrafol men’s hair products range from $44 (for a single bottle of the 2-in-1 conditioner) to $527 for a six-month supply of the nutraceutical and DHT inhibitor bundle.

Hims Hair Rx prices range from $22-59/month, with over-the-counter options like topical minoxidil costing $15.

Hims prescription purchases ship for free, even if they are not part of a subscription. Hims over-the-counter products ship for $5. Nutrafol products ship free as a part of a bundled subscription, but one-time purchases incur a $6.95 shipping fee.

Hims ships within the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), and some similar products are available in the United Kingdom (using the U.K. website). The Nutrafol website indicates the company ships to a “limited group of international countries,” though the exact countries aren’t named.

Hims Hair can typically accommodate shipping to P.O. boxes, but Nutrafol does not.

Hims offers subscription options on some hair products, allowing customers to choose from three-, six-, or 12-month plans(there’s also a five-month option for some products).

Products ship for free on a recurring schedule, and opting for subscription models with Hims often saves you money.

Both brands will charge you around the same time each month (or every few months, depending on your delivery cadence), and you can cancel or pause shipments as needed.

Hims subscriptions include free 24/7 provider messaging.  A Nutrafol subscription currently (at the time of writing) also includes naturopathic doctor consults, a hair mineral lab analysis (wherein a sample of hair is tested to see what factors may be impacting your hair health), and a subscription to Headspace, a library of sleep, stress management, and meditation tools.

If you subscribe to Nutrafol, you can opt-in to refills. Your first order includes a reusable glass jar, and subsequent orders have pills packaged in refill pouches made from recycled plastic (though the pouches aren’t recyclable again).

Hims provides unlimited messaging with a healthcare provider and private check-ins as part of every subscription. Communication is asynchronous, allowing you to reach out with questions anytime via our messaging platform — no limits! Providers typically respond within 24 hours, often even sooner.

Nutrafol offers subscribers access to one-on-one consultations with naturopathic doctors, though it’s not immediately clear on their website whether these visits are unlimited.  Regular subscribers can set up a twenty-minute phone consult with a provider (but there isn’t an option to message one directly).  Nutrafol also offers something called the GrowthPlan+ ($299 a month), which includes unlimited products, unlimited provider access, and other perks like gifts and a personalized nutrition plan.

Some independent research backs Nutrafol, but far more research is available for products offered by Hims, most notably minoxidil and finasteride.

Many people wonder if Nutrafol works for men. Nutrafol has funded several clinical studies (that appear in medical journals), one of which found that 72 percent of men taking Nutrafol saw improved scalp coverage in six months.

Minoxidil and finasteride (and, more recently, the combined use of the two) have decades of research backing their efficacy. These hair loss treatments are generic versions of brand names (Rogaine® and Propecia®, respectively), and they both have approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specifically for treating male pattern baldness. FDA approval requires rigorous testing to ensure safety and efficacy.

Our in-depth guides explain the research on finasteride and minoxidil, but here are some highlights: 91.5 percent of the men in a 2019 study saw improvements in their hair growth while using finasteride, and in a long-term study on minoxidil, 84 percent of nearly 1000 participants saw positive results using 5 percent minoxidil.

Nutrafol isn’t FDA approved because it’s considered a dietary supplement, not a medication. The FDA doesn’t regulate drug-free dietary supplements the same way it does medications.

Both Hims and Nutrafol are known for their excellent customer service. Hims offers customers the option to call, email, or message support (messaging is via the app, which is highly recommended for users). To get started with Hims customer service, log in to your account and head to the Messages tab (web) or the Care tab (mobile app).

Nutrafol has a live chat Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST. You can also email or call. However, when we tried the live chat during business hours, no agents were available to answer a question (despite it being within the allocated timeframe).

We offer a comprehensive approach to men's health, addressing not just hair loss and healthy hair growth, but also weight management, mental wellness, sexual health, and skincare. We also have a partner brand, Hers, that caters to women’s health in all the aforementioned categories.

Nutrafol only has products for hair health — they have more products for women than for men.

  • Hims offers prescription and non-prescription hair loss treatments, including FDA-approved medications like minoxidil and finasteride, while Nutrafol focuses solely on drug-free, supplements.

  • Hims generally offers more affordable pricing for hair loss treatments, with prescription options starting at $22/month. Nutrafol's products are more expensive, but its subscription includes additional perks like a Headspace membership and a hair mineral analysis.

  • Hims' key ingredients have decades of FDA-backed research supporting their effectiveness for hair regrowth, whereas Nutrafol relies on a handful of clinical studies.
