Curious about what minoxidil can do for your hair? Whether you’re just getting started or already a few weeks in, seeing real results from real users can be motivating.

Below, check out before-and-after photos from real Hims customers who use minoxidil — some even combine it with finasteride — to support their hair growth journey.

Before Minoxidil

After Four Months Using Hims Minoxidil Solution

We asked board-certified dermatologist and Hims medical reviewer Knox Beasley, MD what kind of results you can expect from minoxidil in the first few months (and beyond). Here’s what he had to say.

“There can be some shedding during the first one to two months on minoxidil, which is normal and part of the process,” says Dr. Beasley.

But by three months, the shedding should start to slow down. At six months, you should begin to see hair growth and increase hair density.

“Some people may see results sooner, but I always recommend giving minoxidil at least six months to see results,” Dr. Beasley adds.

Dr. Beasley points out that while you might continue to have regrowth after this point, typically the medication is helping to maintain growth after the six month mark.

You can use minoxidil alone (we offer it as a foam or solution). Or you can pair it with finasteride, another evidence-based hair loss treatment. Research shows that using both together delivers better results than using either alone.

We offer access to a 2-in-1 Finasteride and Minoxidil Spray,  a 4-in-1 Regrowth Spray, and an oral finasteride and minoxidil chewable. Both finasteride and minoxidil are also included in our Rx Hair Loss Treatment Bundle.

Here are a few success stories and before-and-after photos of real Hims customers.

Philip W.

Philip W. has been using Hims eucalyptus-scented 4-in-1 Regrowth Spray for two months to treat male pattern baldness. It contains 0.3% finasteride, 7% minoxidil, ketoconazole, and biotin.

Philip W. Before

“I started hair loss treatment because I’d been noticing that my hair was getting thinner,” Philip W. says. “It’s been slowly receding for a number of years, but you could really see my scalp on the top of my head. My goal was to thicken and regrow hair on the top and crown of my head and maybe restore some of the hair at my hairline.”

He adds that these hair changes made him feel like he was getting old faster than he wanted. ”I’m 55 but feel younger, and my thinning hair did not fit with the image of myself.”

Philip W. After Two Months of Using Hims 4-in-1 Regrowth Spray

Philip W. has seen noticeable changes in just two months. He says his hair has continued to get thicker. He’s hoping to eventually see changes to his receding hairline.

“I wear hats less these days.  My hair looks good and is easier to style,” he says. “I don’t feel like I’m looking at my grandfather when I’m looking in the mirror. I feel like I can present myself as the age I am…if not a little younger.”

John T.

John T. started using our 2-in-1 topical finasteride and minoxidil spray in the summer of 2024. The spray contains 0.3% finasteride and 6% minoxidil.

John T. Before

“Initially, I was hesitant to start any hair loss treatment plan as I could not easily see that [my hair] was thinning. However, once I started to see myself in photos with thinning hair, especially at the crown, I was more open to treating it,” says John.

John T. After 4 Months of Using Hims 2-in-1 Spray

After a few months of using Hims spray, John started a new job where he frequently had to be on camera. “Having fuller hair has really boosted my confidence,” he says. “[Using the spray] has become an integral part of my daily morning routine and takes no more time than putting on deodorant or washing my face.”

He adds that he’s always had somewhat thin hair, so the texture and density of his hair hasn’t changed, but it’s grown so that he can no longer easily see his scalp.

John T. After 7 Months of Using Hims 2-in-1 Spray

“I first started seeing results about three months in, and by six months in, it was really noticeable, not just to me, but to close friends and family. When looking at recent photos of me, I am no longer focusing on the thinness of my hair,” he says.

John T. After 9 Months of Using Hims 2-in-1 Spray

“I’m far less concerned about taking photos now. Before starting Hims, I was becoming less enthusiastic about photos of me since I could see my scalp fairly easily, but now I have no problem being in photos again,” he says.

John T. After 10 months of Using Hims 2-in-1 Spray

John says he loves how easy-to-use the spray is. “I haven't missed a day since starting it!”

Phil K.

Phil K. takes the Hims finasteride and minoxidil chew.

A quick note: Oral minoxidil requires a prescription. We offer access to a minoxidil and finasteride chewable following a consultation with one of our providers who will decide if it’s an appropriate treatment for you.

Phil K. Before

“I’ve always had fine hair, but noticed quite a bit of thinning in my early 30s on the top of my head and crown. Looking at my genetics, I did not see things going well for me having a full head of hair in my 50s,” says Phil K.

He tried using all sorts of products like rosemary and hair density oil, but quickly found they weren’t convenient long-term options.

“When I saw there was a daily pill, I thought I could add that to my current vitamin and supplement regimen and be consistent. So I guess long story short, I needed something easy,” he says.

Phil K. After 3 Months of Taking Hims Finasteride and Minoxidil Chews

“Between the daily pill and shampoo, I’ve noticed great progress in not only stopping my thinning, but in how thick my hair is getting. I’m only three or four months in, so I’m very satisfied with how things are coming along,” says Phil K.

He adds that he noticed initial changes after just four weeks of use.

“I was absolutely self-conscious about my hair previously, especially if I didn’t have time to wash it with a volumizing shampoo,” Phil says.

He now feels more confident. He also says his hair has become visibly thicker and is back to where it was before it began to thin.

Phil K. After One Year of Taking Hims Finasteride and Minoxidil Chew

Phil K. now only wears hats to keep the sun out of his eyes!

“[I have] one less thing to worry about. I don’t have to get ready and think about how I will do my hair, and my hair looks less thin,” he says.

How Does Minoxidil Work?

Minoxidil has been FDA-approved for treating male pattern baldness since 1988. While scientists aren’t exactly sure how it works, here’s what we do know about minoxidil: It widens blood vessels, which boosts blood and oxygen flow to hair follicles.

It also helps keep hair in the growth phase longer, giving it more time to grow thicker and stronger.

You can learn more about it in our guide to minoxidil.

How Long Does It Take Minoxidil To Work?

We get it. When you start hair loss treatment, you want to see results fast. Don’t be alarmed if you notice some extra shedding at first. That’s actually a sign it’s working!

But while minoxidil starts working right away, it can take two to four months before you see major results.

You can learn more about how long minoxidil takes to work in our guide.

Progress can be slow and steady with hair loss treatments, and one of the best ways to stay motivated is to take progress photos.

Whether you snap these yourself, selfie style, or enlist the help of someone else, here are some tips for taking minoxidil before and after photos:

  • Choose a room with bright lighting. Bright lighting is important when taking photos. This helps you get a clear view of your hair and scalp. Dim lit indoors? Try taking photos outside on a sunny day.

  • Photograph your hairline, scalp, and any other problem areas. The first signs of male pattern baldness typically show up along the hairline and crown, so be sure to photograph these areas. It can be tricky to snap pics of your crown, so consider asking someone else to help.

  • Stay consistent with angles. To measure your progress accurately, try to take progress photos from the same angles each time.

  • Take photos once a month (but not more). You may be tempted to take photos weekly, hoping for instant results. But your hair needs time to grow. Taking photos too often and not seeing results can be discouraging. Instead, take photos every month so you can see a more obvious difference between photos.

  • Be patient, especially at first. It can take four or more months to really notice results. Stick with it!

Here are a few quick things to remember when you’re looking at minoxidil before and after photos:

  • Visible results with minoxidil treatment often take three to six months. Progress photos like those above can help you track changes over time.

  • Combining minoxidil with finasteride (topical or oral) may deliver even more noticeable new hair growth. And research backs this up!

  • Everyone’s experience is different, and minoxidil results vary. But we hope looking at the photos above helps set realistic expectations for your own hair growth journey.
