You don’t need to schedule an in-person visit with a doctor to get a prescription for weight loss drugs. Hims and WeightWatchers both offer access to holistic weight loss programs. Through these platforms, healthcare providers can prescribe weight loss medications to those who qualify.

Here are the medications available through each platform.

Weight Loss Medications Through Hims

Hims offers access to GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist injections and oral weight loss pills.

GLP-1 drugs available through Hims include:

  • Ozempic. Ozempic is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help people with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar, but it’s often prescribed off-label for weight loss. It’s a once-a-week injection that works by suppressing appetite, slowing digestion, and making you feel fuller for longer.

  • Wegovy. Wegovy has the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide) and works in the same way. It comes in a higher dose and is FDA-approved for weight loss for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition.

  • Compounded semaglutide. Compounded semaglutide has the same active ingredient, but it’s not FDA-approved. It also comes as a weekly injection.

Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved. So it’s important to look at safety and transparency practices.

Hims sources ingredients for its compounded semaglutide from FDA-regulated manufacturers and uses FDA-registered 503B compounding pharmacies in the U.S. Each batch of medication is tested for quality and efficacy, and you can get certificates of analysis (CoA) verifying these results on the Hims app.

Beyond injections, Hims offers weight loss pills, including:

  • Metformin. Metformin is another drug for people with type 2 diabetes, but it’s often prescribed off-label for weight loss. This daily pill works by reducing appetite.

  • Naltrexone. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist that helps reduce and suppress cravings; it can be prescribed off-label for weight loss. It's one of the active ingredients in Contrave®, an FDA-approved weight loss medication.

  • Topiramate. Topiramate, aka Topamax®, is also a daily pill. It’s approved to treat epilepsy and migraines and, again, is often prescribed off-label for weight loss. It can suppress appetite and minimize binge-eating behaviors by targeting reward pathways in the brain.

  • Bupropion. This antidepressant can be prescribed off-label in combination with other medications to help support weight loss. Bupropion is also an active ingredient in Contrave.

Hims offers access to customized oral weight loss kits that combine the above oral medications, and sometimes vitamin B12 for supplemental support.

WeightWatchers Weight Loss Medications

WeightWatchers offers access to injectable GLP-1s and oral weight loss medications.

Its GLP-1 injections include:

  • Ozempic

  • Wegovy

  • Compounded semaglutide

  • Saxenda

  • Mounjaro

  • Zepbound

Saxenda is approved for weight loss in those with a BMI of 30 or more or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition. This daily injection can help reduce hunger levels.

Mounjaro is another diabetes drug often prescribed off-label for weight loss. It’s a weekly injection that also works on reducing hunger and increasing fullness.

Zepbound has the same active ingredient as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), comes in the same dose, and works for weight loss in the same way. The difference is that Zepbound is FDA-approved for weight loss in those with excess weight or obesity.

WeightWatchers makes its compounded semaglutide in a 503B FDA-registered outsourcing facility. Certificates of analysis are available on request.

WeightWatchers oral medications include naltrexone, bupropion, and metformin.

Rx weight loss treatment, 100% online

Weight loss medications are most effective when used alongside lifestyle changes, like dietary adjustments and exercise. Both Hims and WeightWatchers offer access to additional services to help you start and stick to healthy habits that promote weight loss and support weight management.

Here’s what’s on offer.

Hims Weight Loss Services and Support

Hims has an app with behavioral change tools and educational content.

You’ll get:

  • Habit trackers to tally your protein intake, physical activity, hydration, sleep, and weight loss progress

  • Meal plans and recipes

  • Nutrition tips tailored to your eating profile (like whether you’re a stress eater or tend to eat out of habit)

  • A library of educational content on nutrition, exercise, sleep, mental health, and more

Protein Bars and Shakes

On the Hims app, you can also purchase nutritious meal replacement bars and shakes. These convenient, protein-packed bars and shakes are designed to support people taking weight loss medications.

They can make nutritious eating quicker and easier while adding more protein to your diet. Adding extra protein to your diet can help you retain muscle mass as you lose fat.

They may also help you:

  • Feel full longer

  • Eat a consistent amount of calories each day

  • Get more protein and essential nutrients

  • Easily get more protein, without a lot of preparation or cooking

WeightWatchers Services and Support

The WeightWatchers app has behavioral change tools and educational content to help you hit your weight loss goals. But the key tenant of WeightWatchers has always been their point tracking system, which you can use to keep track of your caloric intake.

You can expect:

  • Trackers for your weight, food, and activity

  • Nutrition plans, recipes, and guidance on what to order from restaurant menus

  • A points system to track your food intake and make nutritious choices

  • Virtual nutrition and exercise workshops

  • An online support community

This is all available on the WeightWatchers app.

Both Hims and WeightWatchers are telehealth companies offering online access to weight loss medications and care.

Here’s how they work.

Hims Weight Loss Process

The Hims process goes like this:

  1. Online assessment. Complete an online assessment, sharing information about your weight, current lifestyle, medical history, and health goals.

  2. Healthcare provider evaluation. A licensed provider will review your responses to see if you’re a suitable candidate for medication. This typically occurs asynchronously, without the need for a call or video consultation (but calls are required in a few states).

  3. Medication prescription and treatment plan. If it is right for you, your provider will write you a prescription for weight loss medication and send you a personalized treatment plan.

  4. Direct shipping. Your medication is shipped directly to your door, along with instructions and any injection supplies you may need.

  5. Ongoing provider access. You’ll have 24/7 unlimited access to healthcare providers via the app. You can ask questions, discuss medication side effects, or get tweaks to your prescription if needed.

WeightWatchers Process

WeightWatchers has a similar process. You’ll complete an online quiz and share information about your weight, lifestyle, and health history.

If you’re a good fit for weight loss medication, you’ll be asked to schedule a video consultation with a healthcare provider.

If medication is right for you, your provider will write you a prescription and get you started on a weight loss plan. Compounded semaglutide can be shipped directly to your home, and you’ll get access to the WeightWatchers app.

You’ll also have 24/7 ongoing access to healthcare providers to ask questions and discuss your treatment.

Weight loss treatment for where you are now

Now that you know what’s included, it’s time to talk numbers. Here’s how Hims and WeightWatchers compare in terms of price.

Hims Pricing

Hims has a straightforward pricing plan with no hidden costs or extra fees:

  • Hims custom oral medication kits start at $69 a month.

  • Hims GLP-1 injections start at $165 a month.

To get the lowest prices on compounded semaglutide through Hims, you’ll need to sign up for a 12-month plan and pay upfront. But there are other subscription options available, including one-month, three-month, and six-month plans.

You don’t need to pay extra for the initial consultation, ongoing access to providers, prescription tweaks, or access to the Hims app.

You don’t need insurance to access Hims weight loss treatment. But if you have a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA), you should be able use these pre-taxed dollars to lower the cost of your medication (but plans may vary). With FSA/HSA, you may save an average of 30 percent.

WeightWatchers Pricing

To access WeightWatchers medications online, you’ll need to pay for an initial consultation with a healthcare provider. The nonrefundable consultation costs $49.

If you decide to move forward, you’ll need to pay the monthly membership fee. The WeightWatchers membership is $99 per month ($84 per month if you commit to at least three months).

Only oral medications are included in the membership fee.

GLP-1 injections cost extra, starting at $189 a month for WeightWatchers compounded semaglutide — though WeightWatchers offers a discount on your first month ($129 for the first month).

For subscription plans, you can choose from:

  • One month

  • Three months

  • Six months

  • 12 months

The WeightWatchers team offers insurance assistance to people interested in brand-name weight loss injections. While you can definitely try and get your medication covered by insurance, it’s important to understand that most insurance providers don’t cover weight loss drugs.

Hims offers free two-day shipping (shipping times not guaranteed). Your medication is delivered in discrete temperature-controlled packaging to keep everything safe and stable.

WeightWatchers offers free, temperature-controlled shipping in one to three business days.

With Hims compounded semaglutide, customers lose an average of 11.7 pounds during their first month of treatment.

*Based on self-reported data from approximately 1,400 Hims customers on a personalized treatment plan including compounded GLP-1 injections, along with a reduced calorie diet and exercise. Customers reported their weight at their initial medical consultation and their first check-in approximately 4 weeks later.

Reminder: Compounded semaglutide is not approved or evaluated for safety, efficacy, or quality by the FDA. Stopping weight loss treatment has been shown to result in weight regain.

WeightWatchers members lose an average of 19.4 percent of their body weight in 12 months of treatment. It’s unclear which medication members are on.
