Both Hims and Mochi offer access to prescription weight loss medication — some the same, some different.

Here’s what each company offers and a little about how each drug works.

Hims

Through Hims, if you’re eligible, you can get weight loss injections or pills.

Hims Weight Loss Injections

GLP-1 injections available through Hims include:

  • Ozempic. Ozempic is probably the most well-known weight loss drug, but it’s actually approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for type 2 diabetes. It’s often prescribed off-label for weight loss because it suppresses appetite and cravings and increases feelings of fullness. Ozempic is a weekly injection with the active ingredient semaglutide.

  • Wegovy. Wegovy is Ozempic’s weight loss cousin — you might even call them brothers.. It’s also a weekly semaglutide injection that can suppress appetite and increase fullness. Wegovy contains a higher dose of semaglutide than Ozempic. It’s FDA-approved for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure).

  • Compounded semaglutide. Compounded semaglutide contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy, but it’s not the same FDA-approved drug. It can be more affordable and available than brand-name drugs.

FYI: Compounded medications aren’t evaluated by the FDA for safety and efficacy, so it’s important to get them from trusted sources.

Hims compounded semaglutide is made from ingredients sourced from FDA-regulated manufacturers and manufactured in U.S.-based FDA-registered 503B compounding pharmacies. Each batch of medication is tested for safety and quality — you can get certificates of analysis (CoA) for your own batch to verify this on the Hims app.

Hims Weight Loss Pills

Weight loss pills available through Hims include:

  • Naltrexone. Naltrexone is one of the active ingredients in the drug Contrave®, a daily pill FDA-approved for treating overweight and obesity. When combined with bupropion, it works by suppressing appetite.

  • Bupropion. Bupropion (generic Wellbutrin®) is another active ingredient in Contrave. This antidepressant is sometimes prescribed off-label with other medications to aid weight loss.

  • Metformin. Metformin is another diabetes drug often prescribed as an off-label weight loss treatment. It’s a daily pill that can suppress your appetite.

  • Topiramate. Topiramate (brand name Topamax®) is FDA-approved for those with epilepsy or migraines. It’s prescribed off-label for weight loss, as it can suppress appetite and target reward pathways in the brain to reduce binge-eating episodes.

Through Hims, you can get custom oral weight loss kits that include the above medications in a combination that best suits your body and needs. Your kit may also include vitamin B12, if suitable for you, to further support weight loss and well-being.

Customized Dosing Plans

If you get compounded semaglutide through Hims, you’ll get a custom dosing plan. Your prescriber will assess your medical history and goals and work with you over time to find the ideal dosing schedule.

What does this look like? You could start on a low dose that increases gradually or start on a higher dose that increases quickly. Your dosing plan can change over time, too.

Side Effect Management

As with any prescription drug, weight loss drugs may cause some side effects — nausea being a common one. Through Hims, you can get prescription anti-nausea medication, if suitable for you. The medication is ondansetron (generic Zofran®), which you can take as and when you need it.

Mochi

Mochi offers weight loss injections and pills.

Injections include Ozempic, Wegovy, and compounded semaglutide, as well as:

  • Mounjaro. Mounjaro is another drug FDA-approved for diabetes but prescribed off-label for weight loss. It’s a weekly injection with the active ingredient tirzepatide, which works to reduce hunger and increase fullness levels.

  • Zepbound. Zepbound is also a once-weekly tirzepatide injection. It’s FDA-approved for weight loss in those with a BMI of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related condition like cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or type 2 diabetes.

  • Compounded tirzepatide. Compounded tirzepatide is a weekly injection containing the same active ingredient as Mounjaro and Zepbound, but it doesn’t have FDA approval.

  • Victoza. Victoza contains the active ingredient liraglutide. It’s a daily injection FDA-approved for diabetes but sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss.

  • Saxenda. Saxenda is the weight loss version of Victoza. The daily liraglutide injection is FDA-approved for people with a BMI of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. It comes in a higher dose than Victoza.

Weight loss pills available through Mochi include naltrexone, topiramate, and bupropion, as well as:

  • Rybelsus. Rybelsus is a daily pill that contains semaglutide. It’s FDA-approved for diabetes but prescribed off-label for weight loss.

  • Orlistat. Xenical® contains the active ingredient orlistat and is FDA-approved for weight loss. It can stop the body from absorbing fats from food, promoting a calorie deficit (when you consume fewer calories than your body uses). You might take a pill three times a day.

Mochi also offers teens access to weight loss medication through its Pediatric program. It’s for people under 18 with a BMI above the 95th percentile.

Hims and Mochi offer services beyond prescription medication to help with weight loss and weight management.

Hims

With Hims, you’ll get a personalized weight loss plan and access to the Hims mobile app.

The app includes:

  • Meal plans and nutritious recipes

  • Nutrition advice tailored to your eating pattern (like whether you eat when stressed or bored)

  • Trackers to stay on top of protein intake, steps, water, sleep, and weight loss progress

  • Behavior change tools to develop healthy habits

  • Mini-lessons about nutrition, exercise, sleep, mental health, and more

  • Unlimited 24/7 messaging with healthcare providers

You can also purchase meal replacement bars and shakes through the Hims app. Designed for those on GLP-1 drugs, they’re high in protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Our protein bars and shakes can help you retain muscle as you lose fat, feel fuller for longer, and get enough nutrients, even with a suppressed appetite.

Mochi

Mochi has different membership plans that include different services. At the time of writing, you can join the:

  • Health + Medication Plan. This includes weight loss medication, video check-ups with providers, and the option to book labs, genetic tests, and sleep apnea assessments if needed.

  • Nutrition Only Plan. This plan includes video calls with a registered dietitian for personalized nutrition advice.

  • Wellness Plus Plan. You’ll need eligible insurance for this one (which is somewhat uncommon). The plan includes medication, video check-ups, the option to book tests, a custom diet plan, and other services covered by some insurance plans.

  • Wellness Plus Nutrition Plan. Again, you’ll need an eligible insurance plan. You’ll get medication, video calls with a dietitian, and personalized diet support on this plan.

On Mochi’s mobile app, you can request refills, schedule appointments, and message a care team.

Weight loss treatment for where you are now

Both Hims and Mochi are telehealth companies, meaning you can access weight loss meds online — no waiting rooms or IRL appointments needed. Here’s how you get started.

Hims Weight Loss Process

Here’s how Hims works:

  1. Complete an online assessment. Fill out a short online assessment with questions about your weight, goals, lifestyle, and medical history.

  2. A healthcare provider evaluates your answers. A licensed provider will go over your answers and let you know if you’re a good candidate for weight loss medication. This may happen 100 percent asynchronously (through back-and-forth communication), but some states require a phone or video call.

  3. Get a prescription and treatment plan. If eligible, your provider will write you a prescription, and you’ll get a personalized weight loss treatment plan.

  4. Medication is shipped to your door. Medication is shipped to your door in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging with all the instructions and injection supplies (if applicable) you need to get started. You’ll get immediate access to the Hims app to kickstart your weight loss.

  5. Get unlimited ongoing care. Questions? Side effects? You’ve got unlimited, 24/7 access to providers for support and guidance or even tweaks to your prescription if you need it.

Mochi Weight Loss Process

To access weight loss treatment through Mochi, you’ll start with an online assessment, answering questions about your current body weight, lifestyle, and medical history. You’ll then have a video call with a provider who’ll go over your answers.

If you’re a good candidate, a healthcare provider will write you a prescription for weight loss medication and you’ll get a treatment plan. Compounded medications are delivered to your door, and you can pick up brand-name drugs from your nearest pharmacy.

You’ll have regular check-ins with providers via video.

Onto the numbers. Here’s how Hims and Mochi compare on cost.

Hims

Hims custom oral medication kits start from $69 a month.

You can save further if you have a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA). Both Hims oral weight loss kits and injectable GLP-1s are HSA- and FSA-eligible, depending on the plan. This can save you around 30 percent.

You don’t need insurance to access weight loss treatments through Hims.

The two telemedicine companies have a few things in common and a few differing factors to help you choose between the two.

  • Other weight loss services. The Hims app includes trackers, recipes, educational content, nutrition advice, and access to protein shakes and bars designed for those on GLP-1 medications. Mochi connects you with a registered dietitian for nutritional support, offers additional lab tests, and has some tracking tools through its web app.

  • The process. To get started with Hims, complete an online assessment. You typically won’t need to do a phone or video call, though some states require it. If you’re a good candidate, you’ll get a prescription, and medication is delivered to your door. You’ll get unlimited access to providers throughout your treatment. With Mochi, you’ll fill out an online assessment and then have a video call with a healthcare provider to go over your answers. If eligible, you’ll get a prescription, and medication is delivered to your door. You’ll have video check-ins with providers.

  • Cost. Hims GLP-1 injections start from $165 a month, and custom oral weight loss kits start from $69 a month. You’ll need to pay for a Mochi membership and medication. A one-month membership to the default Mochi plan is $79 per month. GLP-1 injections start from $99 a month. Both Hims and Mochi weight loss treatments are eligible for HSA and FSA reimbursement.

That’s a wrap for Hims versus Mochi.

If you’re considering Hims and want to see what you’re eligible for, you can take our free online assessment. A provider will go over your answers and let you know which medications would best suit you.
