Both Hims and Mochi offer access to prescription weight loss medication — some the same, some different.

Here’s what each platform offers access to and a little about how each medication works.

Hims

Through Hims, if you’re eligible, you can access weight loss injections or oral medication kits that help promote weight loss.

Hims Weight Loss Injections

GLP-1 injections available through Hims include:

  • Wegovy®. Wegovy® is a weekly semaglutide injection that reduces hunger and helps you feel full longer. Wegovy® contains a higher dose of semaglutide than Ozempic. It’s approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes or hypertension (high blood pressure).

  • Ozempic. Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and is often prescribed off-label for weight loss. It contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy®, but at a lower dose, and is also a weekly injection.

  • Mounjaro. Mounjaro is another once-weekly injection FDA-approved for diabetes but prescribed off-label for weight loss. It contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, which works to reduce hunger and increase fullness levels.

  • Zepbound. Zepbound is also a once-weekly tirzepatide injection. It’s FDA-approved for weight loss in those with a BMI of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related condition like cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or type 2 diabetes.

Generic liraglutide. Saxenda, the brand-name version of liraglutide, is FDA-approved for weight loss.

Hims | Oral Medication Kits

On the Hims platform, a licensed healthcare provider trained in weight management can prescribe custom oral weight loss kits, if appropriate for you. Your weight loss medication kit may include some combination of the following medications:

  • Bupropion. Bupropion is an antidepressant that can be prescribed off-label in combination with other medications to help support weight loss.

  • Metformin. Metformin is FDA-approved as a diabetes drug and sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss. The daily pill can suppress appetite and promote insulin sensitivity.

  • Topiramate. Topiramate (or the brand-name version, Topamax®) is an antiseizure drug that’s prescribed off-label for weight loss. It suppresses appetite, which can make you feel fuller for longer

  • Naltrexone. Naltrexone reduces cravings for alcohol and opioids.

Your kit may also include vitamin B12, if appropriate for you, to further support weight loss and well-being. All at no additional cost.

Side Effect Management

As with any prescription medication, weight loss meds may cause some side effects — nausea being a common one. And if you’re nervous about starting a weight loss medication because of side effects like nausea or vomiting, Hims offers something that might help ease your mind.

If you’re prescribed generic GLP-1s or a weight loss medication kit, you can get prescription anti-nausea medication (if appropriate for you) at no additional cost. The medication is ondansetron (generic for Zofran), which you can take as directed to treat nausea.

Mochi

Mochi is not upfront with the details about which medications it offers access to or the cost of those medications.

Mochi’s website suggests that its affiliated providers may prescribe any weight loss medication, but it’s difficult to say whether these are brand-name medications, compounded medications, or generics.

Mochi also offers teens access to weight loss medication through its pediatric program. It’s for people under 18 with a BMI above the 95th percentile. Although, again, it’s unclear which medications this refers to.

Hims and Mochi offer services beyond prescription medication to help with weight loss and weight management.

Hims

If you get weight loss treatment through Hims, you’ll get prescribed a personalized weight loss plan from a healthcare provider trained in weight management. You’ll also get access to the Hims app.

The app includes:

  • Dynamic protocols designed to build lasting habits around nutrition, physical activity, and sleep

  • Unlimited 24/7 messaging with your healthcare provider

  • 100+ meal plans and nutritious recipes created with input from registered nutritionists

  • Protein guidance to support muscle maintenance while taking weight loss medication

  • Daily movement targets to encourage consistent physical activity throughout treatment

  • Nutrition strategies tailored to your eating patterns — whether you eat from stress, habit, or schedule

  • Psychologist-developed tools to support better sleep and a healthier mindset

You can also purchase meal replacement bars and shakes through the Hims app. These doctor-recommended bars and shakes contain up to 27 grams of protein per serving. Adding more protein to your diet can help you retain muscle as you lose fat. It can also aid weight loss by helping you feel fuller for longer.

Mochi

Mochi has different membership plans that include different services. At the time of writing, you can join the:

  • Health + Medication Plan. The ability to schedule video check-ups with providers, and the option to order labwork, genetic tests, and sleep apnea assessments if needed, presumably at additional cost.

  • Nutrition Only Plan. This plan includes video calls with a registered dietitian for personalized nutrition advice.

  • Wellness Plus Plan. You’ll need eligible insurance for this one (which is somewhat uncommon). The plan includes video check-ups, the option to book tests, a custom diet plan, and other services.

  • Wellness Plus Nutrition Plan. Again, you’ll need an eligible insurance plan. You’ll get medication, video calls with a dietitian, and personalized diet support on this plan.

On Mochi’s mobile app, you can request refills, schedule appointments, and message a care team.

Both Hims and Mochi are telehealth platforms, meaning you can access weight loss meds online — no waiting rooms or in-person appointments needed. Here’s how you get started.

Hims Weight Loss Process

Here’s how Hims works:

  • Complete an online assessment. Fill out an online assessment with questions about your weight, goals, lifestyle, and medical history.

  • A healthcare provider evaluates your answers. A licensed provider will go over your answers and let you know if you’re a good candidate for weight loss medication. There’s typically no need for a call or video consultation, though some states might require it.

  • Get a prescription and treatment plan. If eligible, a provider will write you a prescription, and you’ll get a personalized weight loss treatment plan.

  • Medication is shipped to your door. Medication is shipped to your door in discreet, temperature-controlled packaging with all the instructions and injection supplies (if applicable) you need to get started. Shipping is not an additional cost. You’ll get immediate access to the Hims app to kickstart your weight loss.

Get unlimited ongoing care. Questions or side effects? You’ve got free, unlimited 24/7 access to providers trained in weight management for support and guidance — even medication adjustments if necessary.

Mochi Weight Loss Process

To access weight loss treatment through Mochi, you’ll start with an online assessment, answering questions about your current body weight, lifestyle, and medical history. You’ll then have a video call with a provider who’ll go over your answers.

If you’re a good candidate, a healthcare provider will write you a prescription for weight loss medication and you’ll get a treatment plan. Medications may be delivered to you or you may have to pick them up at a local pharmacy.

You’ll have regular check-ins with providers via video. According to the Mochi website, it may take up to a week to meet with a provider.

Onto the numbers. Here’s how Hims and Mochi compare on cost.

Hims

With Hims, pricing is straightforward — there’s no fee for your initial provider consultation, no membership fees, and no surprise charges. Everything is included in the cost of your weight loss medication.

Through Hims, oral medication kits start at $69 per month with a 10-month plan, paid upfront in full.

Hims currently has a limited-time promotional offer that allows customers to save up to 60 percent off the retail price of Wegovy®. The exact amount of savings depends on whether you choose a three- or six-month plan, paid up front and in full — this can save you up to $800 a month on your first order.

Insurance isn’t required, but if you have an HSA or FSA, you may be eligible for reimbursement. Both oral and injectable medications qualify, and using HSA or FSA funds helps people save an average of up to 30 percent.*

You don’t need insurance to access weight loss treatments through Hims.

The cost of Hims treatment includes:

  • Shipping

  • Any tweaks you need to your medication dose

  • Ongoing 24/7 access to healthcare providers

  • The Hims app, including habit trackers, videos, and recipes

  • Prescription anti-nausea medication (if eligible)

There’s no additional membership fee for Hims.

*FSA/HSA eligibility and coverage vary by plan provider. Actual savings depend on your tax rate.

Mochi

You’ll need to pay for a Mochi membership and for the medication.

The cost of Mochi memberships varies depending on which plan you join and how long you subscribe. For example, if you’re looking at the Mochi Health subscription plan, it costs:

  • $79 for one month

  • $199 for three months

  • $399 for six months

  • $799 for 12 months

For medication costs, prices can vary, and Mochi doesn’t share cost information for GLP-1s on their website. You can use your HSA or FSA account to pay for a Mochi membership.

You don’t need insurance, but Mochi offers support with navigating insurance coverage if you have it.

Here’s a little on what you can expect from each company in terms of weight loss success.

Hims

With oral weight loss medication kits through Hims, customers lost weight within two months.

This is based on self-reported data from approximately 1,986 Hims customers on a personalized treatment plan including oral medication kits, along with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise. Customers reported their weight at their initial medical consultation and check-in approximately two months later.

Clinical research on Wegovy® has demonstrated that people can lose about 20% of their body weight over a 68-week period, with additional studies supporting the medication’s sustained results over time.

Mochi

The Mochi website states that customers lose an average of about 15 percent of their weight. It’s unclear which medication customers are taking or how long it takes to see these results.

If you’re looking to lose weight, Hims and Mochi are two platforms that can connect you with healthcare providers online to access weight loss medication, if appropriate for you.

One more time for the people in the back:

  • Medications available. Hims and Mochi offer access to GLP-1 injections and weight loss pills. Hims offers access to personalized weight loss medication kits.

  • Other weight loss services. Through the Hims app, you access a range of tools and guidance to promote sustained weight loss, including dynamic plans to track and improve nutrition, movement, and sleep habits, and more than 100 recipes created with nutritionists. The app also offers personalized protein advice to maintain muscle mass during medication use, daily activity targets, and a variety of educational content designed to help you optimize your treatment experience. Mochi connects you with a registered dietitian for nutritional support and offers the option to order lab tests.

  • The process. To get started with Hims, complete an online assessment. You typically won’t need to do a phone or video call, though some states require it. If a licensed provider trained in weight management deems you a good candidate, you’ll get a prescription, and medication is delivered to your door at no extra cost. You’ll get ongoing, unlimited access to providers throughout your treatment. With Mochi, you’ll fill out an online assessment and then have a video call with a healthcare provider to go over your answers. If eligible, you’ll get a prescription.

  • Cost. Through Hims, you’ll find straightforward pricing and no extra membership fees. Oral weight loss kits are priced from $69 per month for a 10-month plan, paid up front in full. For a limited time, Hims customers can save up to 60 percent off the retail price of Wegovy® with a six-month plan paid up front in full.

With Mochi, you need to pay for a membership plan, which doesn’t include the cost of medication. It is unclear how much medications through Mochi cost.

That’s a wrap for Hims versus Mochi.

If you’re considering Hims and want to see what you’re eligible for, you can take our free online assessment. A licensed provider will go over your answers and let you know which medications would best suit you.
