Fluoxetine is an antidepressant, notably the first SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) approved for use in the United States. It has been approved by the FDA and marketed under the brand name Prozac® for over three decades.

Currently, fluoxetine is FDA-approved for acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD), as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa, and panic disorder. Not all mental health conditions can be treated by a provider through our platform.

How do you use fluoxetine (generic for Prozac)?

Always take fluoxetine exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Dosing instructions may differ for you. Abruptly stopping fluoxetine is generally not recommended, even if you feel better, because serious withdrawal symptoms can occur. As such, providers often recommend patients take a missed dose of fluoxetine as soon as possible unless the next scheduled dosing time is near.

Fluoxetine has not been systematically studied for its potential for abuse, tolerance, or physical dependence and is not known to have addictive properties. other antidepressants (such as alprazolam or diazepam, which can cause a rare but serious condition known as serotonin syndrome),
NSAIDs (eg, naproxen, ibuprofen)
blood thinners such as warfarin
certain recreational drugs including alcohol or MDMA ("ecstasy"), and the herbal supplement St. John's Wort
Drugs that slow down Prozac effectiveness, such as pimozide, thioridazine, vinblastine or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, desipramine, imipramine), among others.
